Intimism: Late 19th- and early 20th-century painting.

Subject matter: Intense exploration of the domestic interior .

Major Artists: Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard

Goal: To convey the warmth, comfort, and quiet isolation of interior scenes.

Bonnard and Vuillard used the Impressionist broken-colour technique of capturing the light and atmosphere of the fleeting moment. But unlike the Impressionists, who derived their colours from precise observation of the visual world, these painters exaggerated and distorted natural colour to express mood.

Their works celebrate pattern and ornament, challenge the boundaries that divide fine arts from crafts, and, in many cases, complement the interiors for which they were commissioned.

Henri Matisse may be the true heir to this tradition, as he infused grand decoration with colorist abstraction to create a new style that belonged fully to his own historical moment.
